Micro Teaching

Last class, I did micro teaching with my partner, Micchi.
We did a mini reading lesson. Thank you for your cooperation with us!
I would like to review and write about it.

The objectives of my pre-reading and in-reading activities
・In pre-reading activity, I read the textbook and students listened to me without it. After that, we asked them what the word they could hear and what did it mean. Students tried to think about what the story was about and what are the key words about it.
・In in-reading activity, students tried to understand the story using work sheet after reading text book. And we checked student's answer and the contents of story.

What were the strengths and weaknesses of my mini-lesson
Strenghs
・We used a very short part of story. Some students might have got bored reading it at the beginning of the lesson and we tried not to happen that. So we didn't show the story at first and students turned their attention to teachers.
・When we explained the story, we used pictures and they helped students understand the content of story, and what's more, they attracted students.

Weaknesses
・If we had given students more reading activities, our mini- lesson would become better and more cheerful.
・We couldn't finish our lesson in 15 minutes. I think there were some ideas to take less time. For example, we could have explained more shortly and clearly, and when students worked on sheet, we shoul have given a time limits and so on.
・I tryed to help students who have some question or trouble but I could have helped more students.

Discoveries about teaching
・After micro teaching, I realized that English education at Jr. high school was very difficult, especially, I had difficulty in thinking about what students understand and how to cope with students who have negative attitude to English.

It was really good oppotunity to my practice teaching in this summer. What I learned from this experience will be helpful during it, and I want to get many skills about English education.

Thank you for reading my blog and pleaes write comment about our micro teaching.

Naojin,
I really liked your lesson even though I was being very uncooperative. I learned how difficult it is to maintain a bad attitude throughout a lesson when the teachers are trying hard to get you involved in the class!
Your pre-reading activity was very interesting. I think that I will try it myself. However, after students said the words I think it would have been a good idea to talk about the theme of the story. For example, after writing the words on the board you could have asked, “What do you think this story is about?”
I thought your summary of the story at the ending or your lesson should have been done in ENGLISH using the pictures. The pictures can give students hints to help them understand what the teacher is saying so please use them! You could have used Japanese to confirm the answers to your questions about the reading before you did the summary. Also, I think that your questions could have been written easier. Questions 2 & 3 would have been difficult for students to understand. I would have rewritten the questions like this:
2. What did the storm do?
3. What did people find the next day?
Question 4 should be changed to “Someone called into the hole. What DID he SAY?”
Overall, you did a good job and I think that you and Micchi should be very proud of your efforts.

Naojin,
Thank you for your teaching. I enjoyed your class and learned many things from it.
I liked your pre-reading activity very much. It was interesting to get students to say the words that they could catch in the story. I want to try this way of pre-reading in the future.
But you should have had more time to get students to read or speak English since it was a reading lesson. Also, JET would do better to speak English more, I think.
Anyway you did a good job. And I think it would be a good experience for you. Thank you.

Hello!
I think your teaching English is very good way. Especially, your work sheat is easy to understand the story. I could grasp flow of the story, and your explaining with pictures is also nice idea.
End of class, you taught us about next class. It is important thing.
But,as you wrote, it took too much time. I think you will do better to teach pre-reading or in-reading.
Anyway, I like your teaching! Thank you for your teaching.

Hi, Naojin! Thank you for your teaching! I liked your in-reading activity. It was new idea for me and students may concentrate on the story as you hoped to. I think that it was better to make students think about the topic or story after listening. I couldn't understand whether you wanted us to imagine the context or learn new words in the class. We had good practice to read the sentences and we could understand the story with pictures, but the worksheet was a little difficult for ths students who are not good at English. Anyway I could learn many points from your class. Good job! See you!

I wanted you to act with more smile to us.Smile is very important because it make students feel very comfortable.
As a support for the students, you shold do so.
Thank you for your teadhing☆

Hi!This is Nakki.Thank you for your teaching!
Not looking at the textbook at first and listening to the teacher had students concentrate the class very much. And your work sheet was good, too! But as Mr.JH wrote,I felt question 2 and 3 were diffcult for students to understand and answer. And,I agree with Mr.JH's idea.Lastly your summry of the story was very interesting and effctive.I enjoyed your teaching☆

Hello, Naojin and Micchi.
Your handout was so cool! I agree and try to use this form.
Though let's face it. I could imagine what you want to do, but it took too long time. That was "Micro" teaching, so should we act and choose some part of teaching?(I can say other groups)
Your sense was nise, so you will be good teacher.

Hello, Naojin! This is Pizza.
I think your pre-reading activity, listening the words without text book was very effective of atracting students' attention. And the worksheet helped us to understand the contents.
If there is more time, it would be better for the teacher to read the text book more in the pre-reading activity to have the students listen to the key words.
Thank you for your teaching!

Thank you for your class.
I had interested in the picture. Did you draw that? That was helpful for English leaner. A visualised teaching materials will make student have a interest and attract a class. We studied a new words at fist. As for this class, a focus was set of not only the new words and phrases but also the contents of the textbook. And you helped student who answered a Question. That's nice.

I am very sorry for late comment. The idea of “Hiso-hiso reading” was very interesting! It helped students become familiar the sentence. I was impressed by your positive attitude for any students. We felt easy to ask teacher some question from it. Thank you for good teaching.
